About TWA (Trans World Airlines)

TWA, or Trans World Airlines, was a major American airline that operated from 1930 until its acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. This iconic airline transformed the aviation industry and played a significant role in shaping the history of air travel.

The History of TWA

Founded by Howard Hughes in 1930, TWA started as a small mail and passenger carrier. Over the years, it expanded its operations and became a prominent player in the aviation industry. TWA introduced several innovations, such as in-flight movies, in-flight meals, and pioneering transatlantic routes.

Expansion and Legacy

TWA's expansion continued throughout the mid-20th century. It quickly became one of the leading carriers in the United States, operating both domestic and international flights. The airline's distinctive logo, featuring a red and white globe, became synonymous with global travel.

In the 1950s and 1960s, TWA experienced a golden era, known for its luxurious and glamorous service. Its fleet grew, incorporating new jet aircraft like the Boeing 707 and the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. TWA's commitment to innovation and customer experience set it apart from other airlines of the time.

Tragically, in 1962, TWA Flight 800 crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York. The accident claimed the lives of all 230 passengers and crew members on board, leaving a lasting impact on the company and the aviation industry as a whole.
