The History of Juneteenth
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, which declared that all slaves were free. This came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The delayed news of freedom reached Texas last, resulting in Juneteenth becoming a significant and symbolic day for African Americans.
